October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

I challenge each of you  readers to do one thing a week:

help educate by passing out flyers or ribbons
pass on information to your work place/DR departments
Talk to someone who is in crisis or that you suspect is being hurt
volunteer at the local shelter/crisis hotlines
donate clothes to the shelter in your hometown
talk about with others, facebook it, tweet or whatever other magic you do so well.

Did you know that your old cell phones can be turned in to most dealers for DV victims so they have immediate access for 911?  they dont work for anything else but emergency calls... the companies like T Mobile and Verizon have been doing this for a few years.  Clean out your drawers!

Pick up pamphlets at your local centers and leave them on counters at dry cleaners, resturants, windsheilds, wherever.

Ask to put up a flyer in local stores  windows.

a portion of all my jewelry sales goes to the Houston DV shelter.

Love isnt supposed to hurt.   There will be more information over the next few weeks.  In the meantime You can follow the collection to the left for artfire, you can plurk, tweet, blog Facebook it... or connect to this blog.  Leave a comment and let us know!

So what are you going to do about it???

  1. Kudos to you for blogging about such an important and sensitive issue. I hope there will be a day when domestic violence is not tolerated in any form.

  2. I dont think that will happen in our lifetime. It is a secret crime, one of shame and power and ugliness. As bad as it is in the US, It is so much worse in the other countries...

thanks for stopping in! Its not always DV.. but I do try to mix things up with humor and hope. Cus there is hope for us survivors.

  3. Thank you for this blog post. This issue is very personal to me for many reasons, and I did some volunteer work with a shelter a long time ago. I'm ashamed I didn't know this was Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but I will be sure to seek out a shelter to donate some clothes and blankets.

  4. Good Idea Speranza.. breast cancer month trumps DV ( they share the same month. ) It is easier to talk about cancer than to educate or help DV ... most folks think the survivors/victims deserved it cus they are too stupid to leave, not understanding the dynamics of the psychological sway that happens in the relationship.
